Guides to the Book Universe: breve guida ai romanzi di Mackenzi Lee

Salve a tutti, miei cari lettori! Ho deciso di aprire il nuovo anno con una nuova sorta di rubrica per il blog, questa volta dedicata ai miei autori preferiti.

Ho deciso di chiamarla “Guides to the Book Universe“, dato che ogni articolo sarà una breve guida ai romanzi pubblicati finora da un determinato autore. Non parlerò necessariamente di libri che ho già letto o che voglio leggere, ma di tutti quelli scritti e pubblicati da questi scrittori. Cercherò di spiegarvi quali sono collegati tra loro e come, oppure come sono strutturate le saghe, ma non ci saranno miei pareri personali. Lo scopo di questi articoli non è infatti fare delle mini-recensioni, ma darvi letteralmente una guida per orientarvi tra le opere dello specifico autore.

Detto questo, ho scelto di aprire le danze con l’autrice un po’ meno conosciuta tra quelli nella mia lista: Mackenzi Lee 📚

Il suo romanzo d’esordio è uno stand-alone intitolato This Monstrous Thing, pubblicato nell’ormai lontano 2015. Si tratta di un retelling steampunk del Frankenstein di Mary Shelley. Non è ancora stato tradotto in italiano e non ho nessuna notizia a riguardo, ma considerando che altri libri dell’autrice sono stati tradotti spero che prima o poi arriverà la traduzione anche di questo.

Trama:《In 1818 Geneva, men built with clockwork parts live hidden away from society, cared for only by illegal mechanics called Shadow Boys. Two years ago, Shadow Boy Alasdair Finch’s life shattered to bits. His brother, Oliver:dead.
His sweetheart, Mary:gone.

Abbiamo poi la sua opera più famosa, la trilogia dei Montague Siblings, composta da: The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy e The Nobleman’s Guide to Scandal and Shipwrecks. Non saprei ben definire di che genere si tratta, ma sicuramente hanno le basi del romanzo storico con qualche tocco paranormale/fantasy. Io ho letto i primi due, che sono stati anche tradotti in italiano, ma mi manca il terzo (che leggerò sicuramente quest’anno). Vi lascerò qui la trama del primo volume, per evitarvi i piccoli spoiler che trovereste in quelle del secondo e dell’ultimo.

Trama:《Henry “Monty” Montague è nato per essere un gentiluomo, ma né i collegi più esclusivi d’Inghilterra né la disapprovazione del padre sono riusciti a imbrigliare le sue passioni: il gioco, il buon vino, e l’amore di una donna. O di un uomo. Monty si è infatti innamorato perdutamente del suo migliore amico, Percy, con il quale parte per il Grand Tour: un ultimo anno di fuga e di follie edonistiche prima di assumersi le sue responsabilità di lord. Ma un’incauta decisione trasformerà quel viaggio in una caccia all’uomo attraverso l’Europa, mettendo in discussione tutto il mondo di Monty.》

Esiste anche una novella collegata a questa saga, precisamente ambientata dopo la fine del primo libro. Il titolo è The Gentleman’s Guide to Getting Lucky. Credo che anche questa sia stata tradotta e che sia inclusa nella versione bind-up dei primi due libri, però non sono molto informata in materia in quanto ho sempre letto tutto in inglese.

Abbiamo poi il primo libro che Mackenzi Lee ha scritto per una trilogia young adult basata su alcuni anti-eroi della Marvel, Loki – Where Mischief Lies. Anche questo è stato tradotto in italiano, con il titolo “Loki – Il Giovane Dio dell’Inganno“.

Trama:《Non è ancora giunto il momento di misurarsi con gli Avengers: per ora il giovane Loki è impegnato al massimo delle sue forze per dimostrarsi eroico, mentre tutti intorno a lui lo ritengono inadeguato. Tutti tranne Amora, l’apprendista maga, che sente Loki come uno spirito affine e riesce a vedere la sua parte migliore. È l’unica che apprezzi la magia e la conoscenza. Un giorno però Loki e Amora causano la distruzione di uno degli oggetti magici più potenti conservati ad Asgard e lei viene esiliata su un pianeta dove i suoi poteri svaniscono. Privato dell’unica persona che abbia visto la sua magia come un dono piuttosto che una minaccia, Loki scivola sempre più nell’ombra di suo fratello Thor. Ma quando tracce di magia vengono ritrovate sulla Terra e messe in relazione con alcuni omicidi, Odino manderà proprio Loki a scoprire cos’è successo. Il secondo libro di questa trilogia di companion invece non è ancora arrivato qui da noi, ma è dedicato alle due sorelle adottive presenti nella testata de I Guardiani della Galassia. Il titolo è proprio Gamora and Nebula – Sisters in Arms.

Trama:《This three-book series explores the untapped potential and duality of heroism of popular characters in the Marvel Universe. The first book in these series, Loki: wehre Mischief Lies, was an instant New York Times best seller and received two starred reviews.

Purtroppo ancora non si hanno notizie certe del terzo e (forse) ultimo volume di questa trilogia, ma spero di potervi aggiornare presto a riguardo. E date queste circostanze, siamo infine giunti alla conclusione di questa breve guida.
